How to Make a Queen Size Comforter

You need a new duvet for your double bed, but with the prices skyrocketing, you can’t afford to buy one. You can make one for cheap and it will be as cute and warm as the one you bought. Try creating this simple “seamless” pattern and you’ll get more in no time.

You will need to sew your yardage together to get an overall size of 83 by 87 inches. Don’t worry about the seams. You can incorporate them into the design.

Lay the sturdy piece of fabric on the floor or on a large, flat surface of the same size. The plain side should face the floor.

Spread the fleece over the piece of sturdy material. Make sure you keep the fleece at least 1/2 inch from the edge of the fabric.

Lay the patterned piece of fabric on the batting with the right side facing you. Pin the three pieces together.

To make a border around the comforter, take the wide border, such as lace or something similar and place it under the top layer of the comforter. Make sure you keep it straight as you work. Remove the pins if necessary and replace them to keep the lace or border in place as you work. Try to keep the pins as far away from the edge as possible to complete the next step.

You will now start from one edge of the border. Remove the pins from a desired section, say about four inches. Keeping everything in order, place a strip of hem tape against the top fabric and press firmly. Then press the hem strip firmly against the lace edge. This sets it up. Repeat the same process under the lace edge, securing it to the bottom material. Continue all around the quilt, working small areas at a time.

Once the quilt is hemmed all around, iron the edge to create a clean edge. Use quilt thread and with the right side of the quilt facing up, thread a needle with about 4 inches of thread. Put a tie anywhere on top of the quilt. You can place the ties at random or in a certain design by marking the top of the quilt where you want the tie to be. The next step is very similar to sewing a button. Pull the yarn through all layers of material down, leaving at least 1 1/2 inches of loose yarn, and work up through the material. Immediately turn the needle and thread the fabric again. Repeat this process twice. It’s like sewing a button … without the button! Make sure you end up with two threads hanging over the quilt. Cut to the desired length of 2-4 inches, depending on the look you want. Place a double knot in the tight thread against the top of the quilt. Repeat this step all over the top of the quilt. This will give the quilt a quilted look and make it more resistant to washing.

You now have a queen size duvet and have customized it to your personal taste.

If you want, you can use a sewing machine instead of hemming tape. Try different tie designs to get the one you particularly want. Examples: random, rhombus, straight lines or hearts inside hearts.
